Printing from a DOS application
Use these instructions only if your application runs from
the DOS prompt in Windows. For Windows 3.1 it is
recommended to have 8 mg of RAM.
When you print from a DOS application, your printer uses PCL 3
emulation. You must install a printer driver for PCL 3 emulation
in each DOS application. In Windows 3.1, avoid switching from
your DOS application to another application while your job is
printing. See the README file for your Lexmark printer for more
information.
1. Make sure the Lexmark Colorjet Printer is the Default
printer.
2. Make sure you are in Windows, not native DOS.
3. From the printer's Control Program, click the Options Tab.
4. Make sure Disable CJXXXX DOS Printing (Enable DOS Printing to
other Printers) is not checked.
5. Double-click the MS-DOS icon located in the Main group of
Windows 3.x under Program Manager. In Win95, click Start, then go
to MS-DOS found under Programs.
6. Start your application from the MS-DOS prompt.
7. Install the HP DeskJet 500C as the current printer in the DOS
application from which you are printing.
Some applications offer a color or black (mono) version of the HP DeskJet 500C driver. Choose the black (mono) version if you are printing in black only. Choose the color version if you are printing in color and black. If your application does not offer the HP DeskJet 500C printer driver, install the DeskJet 500 printer driver. You will not be able to print in color with the DeskJet 500 printer driver.
For help installing a printer, see your application user's
documentation.
7. If you need to change printer settings that are not in your
application, use the DOS Printing Tab in the printer's Control
Program.
8. Print as you normally would from your application.
Note: When you make changes to the DOS Printing Tab, they apply to DOS print jobs only. When you make changes on other tabs, they apply to all print jobs.

If you have followed the setup instructions contained in the
DOS section of the Frequently Asked Questions and are still
having problems printing from your DOS application check the
following:
1. Select the appropriate "compatible" driver
in your application's printer setup. The preferred driver is the
HP Deskjet 500 or 500C (for color). If these are not available,
an HP LaserJet II will work as well. If none of these are
available you can select for the application to output as ASCII
text (this may not achieve the correct document formatting).
2. Assuming that the Lexmark ColorJet driver is already
installed you can disable Windows' print spooling.
Windows 3.1X
Go to Main, Control Panel, Printers, and
remove the "X" from the Print Manager selection
at the bottom left of the window.
Windows 95
Select Start, Settings, Printers and click
your right mouse button on the Lexmark Color Jetprinter
icon and choose Properties in the menu that appears. Go to
the Details tab and select the Port Settings
button. Once here, remove the "X" from both
selections and click OK. Then select Spool Settings
and choose Print Directly to Printer.
3. Verify that the correct components are loaded in
your system files. In Program Manager, go to File, Run
(Start, Run in Windows 95) and type NOTEPAD WIN.INI.
Once Notepad opens go to Search, Find and type LXDBOXCP
and click on Find Next. It should find the following
statement: run=lxdboxcp.exe.* If that line is there close
Notepad and go back to File, Run and type NOTEPAD
SYSTEM.INI. Select Search, Find and type LEXSW2,
and click on Find Next. This should lead you to the
following line: DEVICE=LEXSW2.386.* it should be in the
[386Enh] section, and you should only have 1 section with that
title.
* - If these lines are not present, you should completely remove
the driver per instructions included in the readme file provided
with the driver and then reinstall the driver.
4. For applications that will not run in Windows, or if
everything is setup according to this sheet and it is still not
printing correctly, exit Windows and run your application from
True Dos and configure that application to print to a file
(contact software vendor for instructions). Once you have that
file, start Windows and go back to the MS-Dos Prompt through
Windows. Go to the directory where that file is contained and
copy it to LPT1, or to whatever port your printer is attached.
This will initiate the Control Program in Windows and print the
file (ex. COPY TEST.PRN LPT1 /b).
